... and finally, the Taito's Kick & Run and Kiki Kaikai emulation comes on FBA... a big thanks to iq_132 and dink for your help!

IMHO Taito's Kick & Run is one of the best soccer games of 80s... the bootleg version "Mexico '86" was very popular in Italy! Probably Kiki Kaikai/Knight Boy was less well known, in any case it's a "walk & gun" game well made and very funny... both titles were made in 1986.

PS: the "ps4 stop error" on Kick & Run is normal, its because the protection mcu isn't dumped yet (see the first snapshot). "No fear", the error message is only visible at the beggining and the game works well!  (obviously this "protection error" isn't present in the bootleg version "Mexico '86").

PS(2): I apologize to the italian national team for my poor skill ! :P

"Knight Boy", featuring a Shinto shrine maiden as the main character? Alright...

Anyway, good work, guys!

Yes... IIRC also Natsume Pocky & Rocky 1 and 2 use a Shinto shrine maiden as main character (together with a tanuki) ! ;)
PS: the Natsume's games should be not COIN-OPs, but SNES titles.

I first played Kiki Kaikai on msx2 about 4-5 years ago,, then came across the PCE version - but the sprites are "too big", so the feeling isn't the same.  The arcade version is perfect, though - last night I was so happy to finish the driver that I ended up playing the game from beginning to end! :)
*especially for fans of Trick Trap/Laby runner*

Tips:
use the flag weapon(?) to uncover powerups from the little house statue things
save _all_ powerups for level 4+
you'll need 1 timestop powerup for the very end, right after you fight the changeling that morphs between you and other characters.
The neverending level will end when you find all the hidden scrolls (which aren't hard to find), but this is where you use the timestop :)

best regards,
- dink

They're all KiKi KaiKai games, so it makes sense to see the maiden again every time. She's called "Pocky" in these games, okay... but "Knight Boy" still makes no sense to me. On a side note, it's annoying how inconsistent some localizations are. You can't easily tell some games are part of the same series, outside of Japan.

I remember from the PCEngine gamecover of Kiki Kaikai that the character was made to look like a boy in some silly ninja(?)-style dress thing, and I always thought it was until I read this stuff today :)

There're other examples in this regard. A little OT: in the italian version of old anime "Konchū monogatari - Minashigo Hacchi" (Le Avventure dell'ape Maga' - The Adventures of Hutch the Honeybee) the main character "Hutch" was a young male, but in the italian release he was magically transformed in a "she" (the young female " Maga' ") ! :P

Oh... It's not official, according to Wikipedia. That explains the silliness.

Quote
The game originally saw a limited release in North American and European arcades as Knight Boy, a bootleg copy of the original Japanese version not officially licensed by Taito.

If you show the full overscan range (like it was displayed on PCEngine GT) the PCE version can show 240px vertically, a bit more than the arcade version without the borders.

Now, thanks to the work of iq_132 and dink, the Z80 CTC (Counter Timer Circuit) and PIO (Parallel Input/Output) are emulated in FBA... the first outcome is a complete porting of some good Able Corp/Tehkan games (senjyo.c driver):
Baluba-louk no Densetsu
Senjyo
Star Force/Mega Force

... thanks to the Z80 CTC/PIO cores, we will have other good news soon! ;)
