Title: What should I port next? (Archive)
Post by: iq_132 on March 11, 2008, 01:15:37 AM
What driver should I port next?

It must be either

Zilog z80
MOS m6502
Motorola 68000
Motorola 68EC020
Motorola m6800
Motorola m6803
Hitachi HD63701
Hitachi HD6309
Motorola m6809
Signetics 2650 (s2650)

and use one of the sound cores already in FBA:

AY8910
SN76489
SN76489a
SN76496
YM2151
YM2203
YM2608
YM2610
YM2612
YM3812
YMF287B
msm5205
msm6295 (oki)
x1010
ymz280b
k007232
upd7759
ym3526

Please include links to Maws (http://www.mameworld.net/maws/ (http://www.mameworld.net/maws/)) or whatever technical docs you want me to look at.

YM2203
Huh? That's a sound core.  It's already in FBA.

RF5C68 core doesn't work very well. :)

I hope you can add Super Slams (http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/suprslam)!
I'll look at it, but I don't generally like to add systems that are have "Imperfect" status in MAME. That, and games that use konami drawing functions generally are a P.I.T.A. to work with.

RF5C68 core doesn't work very well. :)

Ok, I'll remove it.  Btw, I wanted to ask, is there a way to set ports up for the YM2203? I couldn't find anything like that in the source. TIA. :)

It doesn't currently - but it should be fairly trivial to change the init function to accept functions to read ports and then just pass them through to the AY8910InitYM calls.

For example,

Instead of this;

Code: [Select]
AY8910InitYM(i, nClockFrequency, nBurnYM2203SoundRate, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, BurnAY8910UpdateRequest);
You could use;

Code: [Select]
AY8910InitYM(i, nClockFrequency, nBurnYM2203SoundRate, PortARead, PortBRead, PortAWrite, PortBWrite, BurnAY8910UpdateRequest);
where PortARead, PortBRead, PortAWrite, PortBWrite are passed via the BurnYM2203 init function.

I already have something like that in my source, but I figured there had to be some sort of port handling there already though.

Caveman Ninja

Uses an H6280 cpu for audio. :S

You know, I've looked over the first three (600, amidar, frogger) a few times in the past and noticed they use Galaxian's video hardware.  I was thinking they were in Treble_Winner's Galaxian stuff, but I see they aren't. ^^  So that's a possibility.

And pooyan looks like a good prospect except that that weird sound setup. :)

Thanks the for suggestions Jens.  Good researching!

btw, please do keep posting suggestions.

I would LOVE to see that game in FBA.  Maybe one of these days I'll know enough to actually do it.

Sorry, what?  That didn't translate well at all.

I was thinking about redoing Galaxian from scratch at some point. But if you want to do it then feel free. :)
I was thinking about it, but then I realized I'd rather f*cking shoot myself than write a driver for nearly that many games. lol  Seriously though, a small re-write wouldn't be a bad thing, it's just seems like such a daunting task (100% props to you for doing the first port, btw).

You know, I started a dogfight driver a while back, I should probably finish it. ^^

Again, good suggestions man :)

@Lemonzest and GameNutt,
yes of course that's all together nice Games, but the cores are not emulated by fba, maybe the raiden could be possible.
But I think IQ_132 will train his skill's for the cores m6502 and z80. Search again with this cores and also the soundcores wich are posted
on page one and have fun.

Gradius III (http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/gradius3)
Salamander (http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/salamand)

Erm.. Probably not.  The Konami video hardware is pretty funky and a lot of that sound hardware is not supported in FBA.

Hi iq_132,

My suggestions if possible

The Simpsons  http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/simpsons
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles  http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/tmnt
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Turtles in Time  http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/tmnt2
Mortal Kombat II  http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/mk2
Killer Instinct  http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/kinst

There's already a TMNT driver available for FBA.  As for the others, I'd like to port The Simpsons, but it doesn't use a m68k, z80, or m6502.

@Lemonzest -- Not z80, m6502, or m68k.

@Jens.l -- quite right :)

what other vertical shooters are there that can be ported?

How about the following? they use the same chips as the 1945 III Driver and are by the same people.

http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/dragnblz
http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/s1945ii
http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/s1945 and clones? (looks like the cpu is supported because gunbird is in FBA)

Actually, how about most of the Psikyo Vertical Shooters? they use mostly the same hardware (some even use the SH-2 which is now supported because of CPS3, most of the sound cores are supported in other games.) that would be a great addition.

Thanks.

Edit, just looking at the Psikyo drivers in mame, most of the hardware is supported in FBA :D

What driver should I port next?

It must be either z80 or m6502-based (or very simple 68k) and use one of the sound cores already in FBA:
AY8910
SN76489
SN76489a
SN76496
YM2151
YM2203
YM2608
YM2610
YM2612
YM3812
YMF287B
msm5205
msm6295 (oki)
x1010
ymz280b

Please include links to Maws (http://www.mameworld.net/maws/) or whatever technical docs you want me to look at.

If you want to cut your teeth on 68k then Bionic Commando is fairly simple and quite a good game. It's 68k, with a Z80 and a YM2151, so it's fairly typical of many games and could lead you into other 68k based games. It has background and foreground tilemaps, a sprite layer and a character tilemap layer so it's fairly typical on that score too.

 Z80 = Sound CPU
YM2203C = Yamaha FM Synthesis Sound Processor (Two)

they are saying these are the specs

cpu Z80 @ 4MHz
cpu Z80 @ 3MHz
audio YM2203 @ 1.5MHz

I know it is absurd, but could this be your problem ? or is the m6809 a z80 CPU ? or a typo ?

It has two Z80's (one is sound only), whoever wrote that didn't know what the hell they were talking about lol.  If the main cpu was m6809, it wouldn't run at all, let alone glitchy.

The problem at this point is the use of a tilemap rom rather than standard ram for tile pointers.
It's quite ingenious, really, rom is much cheaper than ram, but the way MAME has it set up, it draws the
entire 8x2048x32x32 tilemap and then copies what's needed to the onscreen bitmap.

I would like to have it just draw the tiles that are needed (8x8x32x32).  I still have some transparency issues as well, I'm not sure if FBA's generic tile drawing can do what I need (I'll have to keep poking around though).

If you're needing to use transparency then use the Mask functions. If you've got any questions let us know and I'll try my best.
Title: Re: What should I port next?
Post by: Barry Harris on March 23, 2008, 07:30:29 PM
A quick look at the game suggests that the background tilemap should be rendered opaque (ie, no masking), the sprites should be rendered with masking (transparency colour 0) and the fg tilemap with masking (transparency colour 79). 79 is a weird number but that's what it looks like!

79 -- 4f doesn't seem to work.  And yeah, I got the rest no problem.  My biggest issue is the tilemap rom used for the background.  I'm not quite sure how to handle it -- any insight would be greatly appreciated. :)

If you want to save memory I'd load the tilemap rom and then decode the tiles on the fly as the game asks for them. It will be slower but will save memory.
Title: Re: What should I port next?
Post by: iq_132 on March 24, 2008, 07:21:25 PM
Yeah, that's my intention.  I just realized that I was loading the wrong rom for the tilemap lol.
I've got it working quite a lot better (but still a long way off).
Title: Re: What should I port next?
Post by: iq_132 on March 25, 2008, 01:43:52 PM
I'm having trouble calculating the offset in the tilemap rom at which I need to start.

Here's what I'm assuming:
The X-scroll is 16bit (0 - 0xffff)
The last 5 bits are used to scroll part of a tile (since bg tiles are 32x32)
The rest should be used to pick which column to start,
- this works out to be 0x10000 / 0x20 -> 0x800 -> 2048 (which is the number of tiles in the X), it also works out that:
 2048 * 8 * 2 -> 0x8000 -> the size of the tilemap rom

so I would think it would work out to be:

(xscroll >> 5)

now, each column is 8 * 2 bytes, so that should work out to

(scroll >> 5) << 4

The thing is, I can scroll through the entire tilemap and it looks correct, but when I try to use the scroll the actual game
provides, it isn't correct (in most instances).

I could definitely use that help Treb. :)

I'm having a similar problem with 1943 - the solution escapes me at present but if I find one I'll post back!

ok.  I may just hard-code a look up table for the offsets.

It would be awesome to have rampart. A very popular retro game that's been ported to almost every console. The CPU is 68k, but unfortunately the sound is YM2413 and OKI6295.

Yeah, aside from the sound, it uses the Atari Slapstick, which would be a pain in the butt to port at the very least.

Anyway, here's an update on that Gun.Smoke driver.  I managed to get the scrolling fixed (damned pointers), added savestates, cleaned up the code, etc.
The only thing left is sound, but I'm not sure exactly why it's not working. :S

Well there seems to be nice feed over this post so I will post some games I've always wanted to see in FBA, of course I dont know if the CPUs they use are that hard to port ^^U, I just noticed that when guru dumped the games it was so easily added to MAME, but probably there was a driver already done by that time...

http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/vasara (2000)
http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/vasara2 (2001)
http://www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/vasara2a (2001)

all of them use this:

Quote

CPU:      NEC V60
Sound Chip:      Ensoniq ES5506 (OTTOR2)

and are part of 'Seta, Sammy, Visco (SSV) System' driver (but im only interested in the mentioned 3 of course  :p ...

http://www.mamedev.org/source/src/mame/drivers/ssv.c.html

BIG EDIT!:

LOL, I forgot about the conditions of suggestions xD haha... "It must be either z80 or m6502-based (or very simple 68k) and use one of the sound cores already in FBA:" , I left my emotions go to far xD ...T___T probably in the future I can play those in FBA.

SeeYaa!

Ahh I see.

How about a driver for the following:

Pong
Frogger
Ms.Pac-man
Galaga
Defender
DigDug
Root Beer Tapper
Astroids
Space Invader

SNES games
Sega Genesis games
Sega Master System games
Amiga games
Vetrex
Colleco Vision
Intellevion
Oddessy
5200
ADAM
Speak 'n Spell
Virtua Boy

Are any of these possible in the near term, especially given their low CPU specs?

LOL, you will most probably not see FBA emulating those in the second block, afaik FB Alpha is still an Arcade emulator with some Misc drivers added for fun like Megadrive (Genesis). If it start emulating SNES drivers then it would be something very different from that point, at least for my point of view. It would be interesting but different to the original project objectives.

I think FBA should focus in Arcade type games or systems and the Megadrive as an exclusive, instead thinking of adding other console / portable systems that are non related to arcade in any way.

Btw, 'Ms. Pac-Man' is already in FBA and 'SEGA Genesis = SEGA MegaDrive' afaik

No problem no problem man, It's no biggie. You've got tremendous gratitude from me for what you've added so far!

So we got Ms. Pac-Man and Genesis? That is great! I'm going to see if I can get Damdai to add some cool Genesis beat'em ups like Streets of Rage and Vigilante to 2df.

Although I'd be lying if I said it wouldn't be cool to have SNES, even though SNES already has a couple fantastic emus(ZSNES & SNES9x). The thing about why I'd love to see them, is because as long as they're in FBA, Damdai could add them to 2df. 2df is picking up steam at an enormous rate! I played Final Fight online today with a guy from Japan, and he told be word of mouth is spreading like wildfire about 2df.  Can you imagine being able to play SNES Contra, Mario Kart, River City Ransom, Mortal II, all the Mario games, Donkey Kong Country, etc in 2df? That would be the shit! Yeah, I know Zbattle and CGA are out there, but they don't work properly half the time, and activity is really dead.

But it's all good guys I know chances are slim but I aint trippin', I'm just thinking aloud(I tend to do that alot). FBA in its current state is nothing short of PHENOMENAL! Keep up the excellent work! :D  :notworthy:  :slave:

Easiest way to learn is to look at some of the simpler drivers. A good example would be the News driver - that is very simple and comparing d_news.cpp from FBA and news.c from MAME would be a good start for somebody looking to get going.

Tomorrow I'll do a quick write-up of my methodology for writing drivers. It would be interesting to see how other people go about the process too and then anyone who wants to start looking at writing a driver should hopefully have some good pointers from a few people.

It's possible, but, honestly, porting konami's funky-ass/terribly complex graphics hardware is not really anything I'm horribly interested in.

Thats always Konami's style, complex GFX hardware and software too (MGSolid as a clear example), they normally use all hardware / software capabilities for their games  :p, so it's always a pain in the ass  for any emulator to emulate Konami's games xD

Hi Barry, iq_132 and others...

i've seen on EMMA that some dumps are already available but not yet emulated

just want to know if some of them could be added to FBA and if it will be interesting to add them.

Here's the list of games that i think could be added to FBA port (correct me if i'm wrong because i'm not an expert)

*Bomb Jack (bootleg)
*Dai Makai-Mura (Japan)(bootleg)
*Eyes (alt)
*Hang On (bootleg)
*Ms. Pacman (bootleg)
*The NewZealand Story (Japan, newer)
*Wonder Boy (set 3 bootleg 2)
*Wonder Boy (set 3 bootleg)

I understand what you mean iq_132...But it's not because the Mame Team seems not to have interest for thoses sets that's thoses sets are not interesting :p

another thing...It's interesting to see that FBA doesn't always folllow Mame ROMset (i think about decrypted neogeo sets and Phoenix Editions Sets...and last Three Of Wonders Bootleg added by Barry o FBA). In my opinion, FBA could make the difference with Mame, not by the number of sets ported, but by the quality of sets added and the emulation acuracy (sorry for my bad english).

Of course i don't talk about competition...But (and it's true) some improvments from FBA has been added to Mame, no?

PS : sorry to spam this thread and for my post "off topic"

Of course i don't talk about competition...But (and it's true) some improvments from FBA has been added to Mame, no?

PS : sorry to spam this thread and for my post "off topic"

Don't worry about posting here, as far as I can see you're on-topic, you recommended some drivers to be ported, and this is just a follow up to that post ^^, so at least for me it's ok.

MAME development is ruled by some strict lines, I mean if you're gonna make a driver donation to MAME or some feature, it must follow a series of requisites,..and you see, FB Alpha is a humble project, coming from a humble emulator "FinalBurn". FBA does have some rules and requisites before doing a driver contribution, but as I can understand, FBA will not limit most of the drivers contributions.

For example, let imagine someday I come up with a Vasara I / II drivers including the required CPUs ported for FBA, but FBA is not currently a emulator supporting that kind of hardware, or with no current objectives in emulating it. I think the most probable action by FBA Team is implementing that contribution. For example look at Genesis emulation on FBA!, MAME as far as I know doesn't have Genesis drivers in it's core, MAME could have them easily added but they just don't do it. They can easily emulate MASSIVE amounts of other systems / consoles, but they don't do it because of their objectives and development rules (btw, the name itself, limits them, M.ultiple A.rcade M.achine E.mulator, oh and yeah there are other ports of MAME supporting consoles but that's another story  :p).

If you ask me what emulator do I use in a constant basis, my answer would be FBA. Not because I'm a fan and contributor, but because it have what I'm looking from a emulator, and it have what I like ^^. I use MAME like 1 time per 4 months , because sometimes I wanna play some games not currently in FBA, just a few. But if they were on FBA I wouldn't be using MAME at all  :p. At least that's my reality

So, finally, to get to the point xDD ( I think I did go off-topic LOL)... I think FBA is doing good by emulation some romsets not currently in MAME, like the "Street Fighter Zero (951020 CPS Changer)", it's very nice to see some rare romsets emulated. I dont like the idea of having lots of bootlegs / hacks in the emulator btw, I just would like to see rare romsets. Because after all it's not just emulation, it's preservation of arcade games.

So that's my opinion, on the recommendations made by JacKc ^^. I see FBA like a very different emulator from MAME, because is like a free soul, doing the maximum it can do! pushing it's limits! and evolving from time to time following it's own rules!

I just meant that some of those games only have some strings changed (Changing the manufacturer or date) in the roms and nothing else.  Not really worth looking at.

Read the first post in this thread very very very carefully and then do some research into the hardware that this game runs on. ;)

Sorry IQ, I though that was Hudson, but the hardware is Nintendo... too bad :(
Well, I wont see this game on FBA :(

Thank you so much, and sorry for the inconveniences. I don't know so much about Hardware and enterprise politics.

Just a heads up: my Pooyan gets flipped upside down (lol) when using the "Rotate vertically aligned games" option!  (02.96.98)

A lot of other games I tried that take advantage of that are using it properly.

That didn't work  HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

The thing is, instead of starting out top of the screen vertical to the right side it starts out top to the left side...first game I saw that does that. Once the rotate does its job, which I'm assuming it thinks the image is on its right side, it takes it upside down instead.

Could it be the way it was compiled? Or could our drivers be different? I'm using the main source but I'll compile it again.

I've looked at adding Galaga & DigDug, but they would have no sound.  I may add them anyway.

I take it, those games need a sound core or other stuff?

Does crazy kong and donkey long have the same issue?

No problem. ^^

Donkey Kong needs a MB8884 core, a z80 dma setup, and at the very least sample support.
Crazy kong, on the other hand, is a driver that I've already put a little time into.  I just need to go back and finish it.

Aliens -- Custom Konami cpu -- no.
Jackal - I'll add to my list. :)
Zaxxon -- I really want to add this game, but it's hard for me to put any effort into games with encrypted Z80s that may or may not work with doze. :s

OK it appears that Sega System 1 driver is emulated and I discovered Sega Princess.

IQ, was this driver one of the first ones to be implemented in FBA? How easy or difficult was it to put in?

I absolutely love The Sega Master System version of The Ninja. Have any of you guys played it? It's pretty cool. I wonder what the differences are between the Master System version and the arcade version, other than the gender of the protagonist?

It came quite late. Most of the games are encrypted and were incompatible with FBA's old Z80 core (DOZE). It was only after I ported MAME's Z80 core that I could do a System 1 driver. It was actually this driver that made me port MAME's core in the first place. :)

I grew up with it - quality game but pretty hard. Spent more time with Wonderboy III though!

Honestly I was working with the UI integration for the NeoCD driver by IQ but I stopped after I started university, I might continue in the future when the new ISO loading routine is completed, the old one is outdated and probably not the best way to load ISOs.

I dont know if IQ is working with his NeoCD driver at this point but I guess he has other goals at this moment. I really think is the best to keep working on other things for now since NeoCD driver still require lot of work and FBA already have NeoGeo with many of the games found on NeoCD library .

Thanks iq_132 :) but no hurry.

I wrote a pretty preliminary driver.  There's no sound (nor would I expect any if I do finish this) and it's still quite buggy graphically (and kinda slow).

eagerly waiting for this great game would be added to the emulator.

Thank you so much iq_132.

i've no idea why the colours are all f***ed up, there is no sound emulation and the cpu core is full of bugs.

Nice! Is this based on mess or some other snes emu?

this one:

http://www.tommowalker.co.uk/snem.html

Although I've replaced the PPU with the one from mame/mess, and i'm attempting to rewrite the rest of it so its a bit cleaner and maybe more accurate, if I can figure out what's not working properly.  Also, i'm attempting to use http://www.fly.net/~ant/libs/audio.html#snes_spc for the sound emulation.

Annoyingly, the driver seems to work better in shuffle.

Yeah,
absolutely a great piece of work, i'm really happy you have returned to FBA!

Many thanks to all of you, maybe someday i'll try to better understand the source of FBA and contribute by myself, trying to give back a very small fraction of all the greatness you gave us! ;)
I know C and very little architecture related but i really don't have the time to spend on this beautiful project..

Did I say "Thank You" enough times? :D

Is there an advantage of playing a port like the SuperMarioWorld found at tommowalker over say the original? Im not knocking it just trying to understand the interest. Also Last Hope would be awesome for a future build.

I got pissed off with stuff and wanted to make mario run in fba, and that source looked like the quickest way of doing it. It took about an hour to get running, but the original ppu code was using allegro, and as i've not used that since at least 1999 it made more sense to use the one from mame. I'm clearly never going to finish the driver but it is fun playing with the fba code again.

Just for your information, Charles Mac Donald wrote some great documentation about System E recently :

im in no way asking for this as i know it would require a whole new driver to be ported
but i kinda would like to see this game in FBA one day

I have a presumptuous request.

Feel shy to pull you in ~ whether visco driver transplantation FBA?

I really don't want to use MAME to play vasara, good hard ~

Hope to transplant FBA ~ ssv.c

Here are a few Games

  • Tech Romancer
  • NBA Jam Series
  • NFL Blitz Series
IIRC those, for the most part, use a cpu core that isn't in fba. Can't say I'm terribly interested. :S

You can CHD support for blitz as well. Even less interesting. :)

What about Sega Model 2+3 Roms?

What about midway arcade games?

Also what about Playchoice 10 Games?

The more people ask about the midway games (mk, in particular, the less motivated I feel about working on it). :(

That is a likely target, but I have to get off my ass and port/write a NES core first.

So 1st 2 no way or not for a very long Time.

Well IF you did Midways then people will stop pestering you but you are developers so you do it when you want to.

Playchoice 10 sounds like it could be done very soon

If you are thinking about nes emulation, could you add the onebus emuvt extras features??? Not many nes emulators can handle those extra features:

Does anything even use them?

Also, aren't there enough NES emulators already?  While I can't speak for what motivates iq I don't see how emulating something which has already been emulated 200 times in multiple languages at a pixel perfect level is all that interesting.. there's nothing to discover which hasn't already been discovered.

Maybe reasons for doing things and motivation here is different, but when I emulate something it's always so that I can add to the knowledge pool in an open format (MAME) discovering things which were previously unknowns, or locked away in closed source projects.  I'm sure even when stuff from MAME gets ported iq is looking to fix bugs, or discover something we might have missed?

He recently pointed out 'PoPo Bear' which the DU purchased and dumped, that would be a more realistic immediate target for FBA, and the whole thing still needs reverse engineering / figuring out :-)

Yes, some games require onebus extra features to be emulated to become playable. One example can be found on CaH4e3 web site:

Recenty I recall that I have already emulator able to run OneBus dumps and capable of displaying extra PPU features. So you can see all these broken in fceumm games from DreamGear console. Here is an emulator made by company created OneBus system. It's called EmuVT. Here clean binary dump of DreamGear console, which you can feed to the emulator as is and play all games almost without any problems. Here some screenshots too. Enjoy. Theoretically, this emulator can play any of OneBus ROM dumps from most of OneBus consoles. For example, previous 100-in-1 dump will work too if you strip binary from UNIF file.

As far as i know there is not any other open source emulator that can run onebus games, just emuvt.

Hmm. What mostly motivates me to port/emulate things is to learn about them and to see them in FBA. If I happen to enjoy a game/system, it gets moved up my "to do" list, but sometimes I will port something just because I have a few free hours and am bored. lol

Absolutely. I certainly look to improve on the emulation of games in general -- which is why I've submitted fixes here and there for stuff in MAME.

I hate to say it, but I am not particularly good at reverse engineering (for the most part, I'm not even a particularly good programmer). I love to try, but more often that not, i get nowhere. Give me something like an unknown encryption (especially where I have an idea what the underlying data should be) and I can usually get it. :)
I have been working to improve myself though -- I've taught myself some 68k assembly and am working on learning about the i8080/z80 atm.

You edited your post to add colour and bold to it after you didn't get a reply? urgh ..how rude, maybe you want to make it flash too?.. no wonder IQ says he's ignoring your requests.

As for NBA Jam in the other request.. Same HW as Mortal Kombat, same reasons.

For realistic targets load up MAME, if it says the CPU is a 68000, Z80, ARM or SH2 then it's a likely target.  If it's something really wacky like one of the TMS series then it isn't.

Why is That?

Well I found a Game in those CPU's I would like to be on Final Burn Alpha and that is Title Fight by Sega and Tech Romancer/b] by Capcom
