Title: What are you playing?
Post by: dink on May 31, 2014, 10:18:23 AM
What games have you been playing lately using FBAlpha FB Neo?

I figure it would be nice to start talking about things other than code&testing things... so here goes..

The other day me and a buddy played Vendetta (Crime Fighters 2/Japanese version) 2-player over the net with FBA & Kaillera n02, and it was quite an amazing experiance.

best regards,

Karate Blazers, this one is surprizingly addictive, Double Dragon-style.  I think it took 3 or 4 quarters to get to the end, next time I'll try harder!  :p

Today the game is BlaZeon.  If you're thinking "not that boring h-scrolling shootemup!" then you probably don't know about some of the awesome features this game has. read on...

Your ship is armed with 2 weapons, a regular gun and a fat/slow missile.  When you come up to an enemy in a mecha-suit, hit it 3 times with your missile, and you can capture the suit.  Depending on the suit, you usually get 3x smartbombs or a reconfigurable front weapon and a free life - after you die in the mecha-suit, you go back to your little spaceship.

The bgm is quite amazing as well, it really gets exciting in level 3 and 4.  In 2011, Sweep records actually released a cd of the game's soundtrack :)

Heres some screenshots (First: my high score/game demo screen with the small ship, second and third, random shots from various parts of the game)

Been playing Sol Divide, this game is hard as hell (and awesome).  Its a beat'em'up-shoot-em-up w/a side order of rpg hybrid with a really cool medevil w/sorcerers, demons and other weird things theme.  Also I spent ages getting the sound & music to work perfectly for this release of FBA.  So yea, you want to play it.   ;p
Here's a killer review of the game @ hardcoregaming101, http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/soldivide/soldivide.htm

This is the boss that keeps kicking my ass...

Last night I came across a really great h-scrolling shooter on Megadrive whilst watching retro game reviews on yt, the game is Gaiares.  Great music, great game, a couple levels in there is a level that plays almost like the classic Scramble! by Konami - sort of like it was some sort of tribute to the classic game.
(2nd pic, this awesome dragon-type enemy is trying to take a bite out of my satellite shield!)

I was playing Michael Jackson, Moonwalker (mega drive) a minute ago! You did a great job with this game, friend dink.
I just have to thank you for all support.
Another game that I had some fun in these days was Robocop 2. Great game!

Well, last night I was playing VIOLENT STORM.
Unfortunately we don't have this game in FBA (yet?)
The game is very unique. The music struck me. It is totally different from other games.
The background is great too. There is a lot of animation and funny things going on.

Played a bit of Thunderforce iv (megadrive, in FBA of course) - what a great game, the music and graphics effects are quite amazing for the MD, and the gameplay is exquisite :)  It plays kinda like one of my arcade favorites - Tengai, but in more of a scifi/futuristic setting.

Great one dink! I will play this game soon as possible, because now, I'm playing Road Rash 2! Very "rock and roll" game!

Killer! I love games like Road Rash 1 & 2 :)

I've been playing/playtesting Xexex the past couple days - Look forward to this one :D

Play the Japanese version of Xexex, the EAA/AAA versions (English/Asian) have been horribly cut-back compared to the Japanese (JAA) version.   With the JAA version you get different weapon power-ups & a better/smarter flintlock (drone/force-weapon).  The levels are also laid out a little differently, and more like Gradius.

... on the greatness that is Contra :)

Contra - The Hard Corps.  If you dig the first 2, you'll definitely dig this one.  Its kinda hidden as a clone under Probotector in the Megadrive games list (which will be fixed in the next version of FBA), which explains why I didn't find it until yesterday!

The games bosses are so dynamic and amazing, its really quite impressive.  One boss zapps you into sort of a virtual/digital world, where he assembles enemies out of star constellations which then proceed to attack you.  Then there's this cube of pixels, which assemble into different enemies such as slightly-off tetris pieces, 'copter and tank.  This is something you'll have to see and play for yourself as words don't quite do it justice.

Agree!
This Contra is awesome and also reminds me his rival from SNES, which is Contra III: The Alien Wars. Both games are amazing and comes in the golden ages of the arcades, the 90's.
Here some picks of Contra III: The Alien Wars:

Amazing, in Konami's Monster Maulers, you go up against the brian with arms from Salamander - named Brainy, and it even plays a remix of Salamander's boss music!

This made my day! :D

Freddy - right on, I'll have to try it some day when we have a working snes emu :)

Yeah man, I highly recommend Contra III: The Alien Wars, as well Contra Hard Corps too.
Both games are so cool. In Contra III I prefer the graphics, the music and some backgrounds. Now I'm trying to beat Contra 3 in the Snes9x and.... what a challenge!! Now I'm addicted to this game (you will too, so, think twice before start playing).
Ah, I have the Snes9x last test build, if you want,  just send me a PM.
BTW, now I'm playing Battletoads and Double Dragon. There is also the Mega Drive and the SNES version of this game. I prefer the SNES version, better sound/music and better graphics, but in the other hand I prefer to play in the FBA emulator... who knows some day a crazy programmer don't try to convert some SNES classics to our lovely emulator! :p
Listen the SNES music of this game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWWONVQIpqI
And this amazing tune:                     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5pGhKo5QVc
Crazy, hum?

Edit: The Mega Drive version of Battletoads and Double Dragon is awesome. So we can play this game in FBA and don't miss a thing. I highly recommend this game!

Nice dink... Always with good suggestions of games. Xexex I never played before, so... I will try it.
I like Rocket Knight Adventures too, great game!

These last days I played FBA in Kaillera with a friend. The emulator is running very very good online!
We beat Gunforce 2 and Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
The two games are awesome. Gunforce 2 it's like Metal Slug. Probably is the same team.

But we have more fun playing Zombies Ate my Neighbors. It's a very fun game!

Other day I beat one of the best beat n up that I ever played.
It's Batman Returns... Don't die before play this game (not avaliable in FBA )

The main rom in FBA is Zombies, but:
"Various elements and aspects of horror movies are referenced in the game with some of its more violent content being censored in various territories such as Europe and Australia, where it is known only as Zombies."
So, the original rom is Zombies Ate my Neighbors!

Not quite, but its getting there.  Theres no megaCD(yet) or 32x, and a couple games flat out won't boot, but luckily we've fixed a lot of them.  For the games that work, theres no difference in emulation (that I can tell, at least).

I try to play Radiant Silvergun, but it's slow in my machine :( (or is a emulation problem...)

Alpha Mission and Alpha Mission 2
Carrier Air Wing (WoW!! great game that's ruined my life $$$ lol)
Caddilac and Dinosaurs (another...)
Slap Fight ("famous" shmup)

And various others, i post another list late :)

iq_132, ha! yea, Jet Li rocks :)

So whats on my play agenda lately...
Contra Hard Corps - saw a little review of this game in the new issue of RetroGamer and that irk'd me to play it :)  Friggin' awesome game!
Hammer Away - had to test & perfect the emulation of this one in FBA & test something for _rm_
Blaze On - an atlus game with an _amazing_ soundtrack, and an awesome ship/mecha-takeover feature.  If you're going to play this one, watch the attract-mode to see what the takeover thing is all about before playing :)  Kinda reminds me of Paradroid for some reason.
Batsugun Special ver. pure toaplan quality.  with a side-order of special.

that's it for lately,

Ok, these days I was playing some great games in FBA.
First of all, I would like to recommend one which is blow my mind. Called Battle Mania Daiginjou:
Sure a game that you need to have in your FBA collection. Here some picks:

Another one I will not put images, because the name is enought for itself: Truxton
It's really a classic to be played.

The last one it's one that I hope to see in the future in the FBA. Called Night Slasher:

dink like shooter games.... so my friend, here a game 4 you:
Musha Aleste.... in our great FBA MEGA DRIVE!

Hey guys.... I play many games in a few time. So, I have a lot of save games here, because I dont play for a long time.
I am stuck in Truxton... cant pass this boss! MY LORD, JUST CRAZY!!!

A curious thing happens these days! I played Castlevania Dracula X (SNES)... almost finish!

And then I tried a ps1 emulator and played this game: Castlevania - Symphony of the Night
The beggining of this game looks like a continuation of Dracula X
(https://girlsofwar.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/bonus3qx9_1_.png)

But then, the history completely changes and you are in a skin of a new character:

Both games are amazing...  JUST KICK ASS!

Thanks Freddy :)
I'm a big fan of the Aleste series, with our new GG/SMS driver, we have 4 completely different/new Aleste games to play :)

SMS: Aleste I & Power Strike (same game)
SMS: Power Strike II
GG: GG Aleste / Power Strike
GG: GG Aleste II / Power Strike II
Despite the name simularities, they are 4 completely different games.

BONUS:
We support the GG Aleste II SMS conversion, which runs the game at sms-fullscreen, instead of a small window.  Get the Aleste II / Power Strike II rom and apply this IPS to it, to get a working/fba-compatible SMS rom: http://www.smspower.org/Hacks/GGAlesteII-GG-GG2SMS?sid=0c5a874a1a7820e6705fb42a4d461da7
BONUS #2: in GG Aleste 1, go to the DIP's and change the overscan mode to on, and this will make the playscreen much longer.

best regards,

Taking it ez and having a bit of fun lately...  Usually its 100% shooters for me, not this time!
Magical Taruruuto-Kun on Megadrive (oo, Quiigi!).  I like fun and easy platformers, this one reminds me of Giana Sisters on ye olde C64 for some reason. Tip: if you can't figure out where to go, hit the brick that looks different, and it'll make a step.
The New Zealand Story on SMS, its a bit easier and more playable than the arcade version which is insanely hard.
Quartet on SMS, how the hell do you get the key to the exit on level 2?
Black Belt on SMS \o/ (crick for animationoru tip2: say with Japanese accent)

Going seriously retro this time with the SG-1000 game Super Tank, a 1986-era game which is quite advanced for its time with regular shot, powerups and missiles, mid-bosses and secret areas.  It plays kinda similar to a regular shmup/shooter except you're a little tank on the ground.  Tips: take out the forts aka mid-bosses, which somewhat resemble alien satelite/spacestation-type things - sometimes theres a little icon in the middle of the blown-up debris. This takes you to an underground bunker/bonus stage where at the end you collect powerups to beef up your regular shot.  Fans of Knightmare/Three Dragon Story will have a familiar feeling with this one :)

Been doing a lot of gaming lately with our awesome emulator \o/
I recently discovered Chiki Chiki boys on Megadrive - probably one of the best platformers I've ever played.. to date :)  Excellent boss fights, and everything else.

Also Shadow Dancer & The Super Shinobi (Japanese ver) on Megadrive are very excellent, I'm halfway through the Super Shinobi and Chiki Chiki Boys right now.  I wasn't much of a gamer back when these games were popular "back in the day", so I missed 'em.

It's been almost a year since we added the excellent Kaneko Super Nova driver to FBA and since then I've been trying (very) hard to beat Cyvern on one coin.  There are 2 loops to the game, and the second loop is rediculously hard & to top it off: you only get to see the true ending after beating both loops (Ghouls 'n Ghosts anyone?)
I'm kinda proud of this one :)  (don't want to give away too much):
1 coin, played with Ferious, both loops:

dink, Robocop vs Terminator in Master System is identical of the Mega Drive, but in the Mega Drive the graffics are better.
I`m not a big fan of D.D. Crew, but is a good game!
I was playing Darius 2, but in the FBA the graffics has some bugs in the full screen (is not necessary in full screen, but when you chance de display)!
Title: Re: What are you playing?
Post by: dink on July 17, 2015, 10:24:03 PM
Freddy, I find that Robocop vs. Terminator are more fitting to the 8bit system due to the simplistic nature of the gameplay.
Regarding Darius II, I can't seem to make the graphics glitch and I've tried changing modes & fullscreen <-> windowed while the game was playing.  Can you tell me how you replicate the glitches so that I can investigate the problem?

thanks & best regards,

These days a discover a great game. One of the best arcades, in my humble opinion.
Unfortunately we don't have in the FBA emulator.
The name of the game is: The Outofoxies
You are a professional hitman and is set to kill another agent.
My fav character is Danny and Demi
Here some images:

This piccy will def. be going into my "collection" :)

I love any kind of giant robots that isn't Gundam. Nowday I play with Act-Fencer: Cybernetick Hyper Weapon. FBA can emulate it so there isn't any problem at all. Also it isn't emulation but I play with Ultimate Knight Windom XP and Slave Zero too.

By the way... do anyone here know what kind of multiplayer the Act-Fencer has? Does both player play at the same time?

Act Fancer is a good one, for sure :)  It has turn-based multiplayer, though.

Thanks but I know that game. I prefer the Wolf Fang for arcade. But there is the Metal Warriors for SNES, Target Earth for Megadrive, but I like the Metal Storm for NES too. However I not play any of this nowdays. I play emulators only when I play with friends.

I forgot to mention the Bloody Gears for PC-Engine. That one is the first on my list I want to play with an english translation.

AsteBreed

Both of these are dynamic 3D scrolling shooters for PC. Totally worth a look.

One of my favorite new additions is Alligator Hunt.  If you aren't familiar with this game, don't judge it solely on the name, it has nothing to do with hunting alligators. :)  Its actually quite similar to Blood Bros. & Cabal, but even more addictive.  If you want to get hooked on an awesome classic game, this is it.  It gets even better if you play it with a friend, but its still really great with just one player.

best regards & happy classic-gaming,

I finished 2 loops of the best version*(IMO) of one of my favorite games ever - Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Dai MakaiMura) on SGX (PCE) and recorded a bit of my duel with lucifer and the awesome ending cutscene w/ baddie introduction.  This was probably the 30th or 40th time I've done this with this version of the game, so no tricks/cheats/etc were used here.

Its a wicked game, even on normal difficulty :) Usually if I stop playing for more than a few months I have to do a few practice runs before I can do the full 2 loop run.    Last night I did the first one (GNG) without any pause breaks, Not bring able to shoot up throws me off for a few minutes.. d'oh! :)

Hi ! ;)
I saw the movie too... IIRC in Italy it came out during the 1995... The movie (IMHO) was a very bad transposition of the original game idea, but the game could be "a whole different story" (it should be the only "Street Fighter" game with digitized characters) ! ;) At present Street Fighter the Movie isn't emulated by FB Alpha, the "Incredible Technology 32" board is not between the supported arcade boards... who knows, maybe in a near or far future! ;)

Last game I played on FBA was Great Mahou Daisakusen (known as Dimahoo in the west). It's a pretty hard manic shooter and the score system is rather complex at first, but it looks, sounds and plays really well. I like it. :)

I recently came across some really great games that I'd like to mention - they're super obscure/hidden gem-type dealies.

Magic Crystals A run 'n gun-style game, sorta like Marchen Maze mixed with Heavy Barrel mixed with Flicky.  Don't let the cuteness fool you, the powerups are awesome, enemies are really creative and fun to kill, and the bosses are super diverse.  The first boss is a real mind blower. :)

Rail Chase A lightgun style shooter, not sure what I can compare it to - I'll just say: for fans of Cabal/Blood Bros/Nam1975/Steel Gunner.  Shooting fun in a railway cart.

Levers Possibly the best controls on a platform game ever, from 1983.    This might have been the inspiration for Tehkan's BombJack.  Watch out for the marbles & other baddies.

What's playing: Phelios (romset: phelios), advanced mode (chosen after insert coin), default eeprom settings.
Rules: Play in FBAlpha, feel free to use autofire and savestates.  No cheats/memory editing allowed, though.

Beat the fire boss: 50 points
Beat the end boss: 150 points

Night Slashers is pure class.  You're right, Night Slashers and Crude Dudes/Crude Buster shares a common composer: Tatsuya Kiuchi.

I didn't have much time to play games lately because there was a lot of work to do for the release, but, I did manage to get in a 2-all of Ghosts'n Goblins.  This time I got the shield weapon on the first loop, I'm not sure what triggers this, but it is quite rare I think.

Syvalion.  This game is loaded with awesome music, sound effects and gameplay.
Once you learn how to control your dragon, the game is really great.  Try making a circle on the d-pad while holding fire to go in a quick circle to kill off all the bad guys and bullets :)  It will take a few tries to get it - Move slowly at first!

Cheeky Mouse.  Those darn mice are trying to take your cheese.  Forget setting up mouse traps, just grab the biggest hammer you can find and smash them to death!  Nice wholesome fun for the entire family.
Note: Cheeky Mouse needs a sample pack to sound right.  Grab the samples pack attached to this message and put it in "fbalpha folder\support\samples"

Have fun!

Thanks for that. Somehow, your archive has a "one.wav" file that is apparently not expected by FBA. So FBA expects "two.wav" but not "one.wav". Weird. Anyway, I downloaded a cheekyms sample pack for MAME not long ago, and it didn't have that "one.wav" file either.

By the way, are those sounds impossible to emulate due to being hardware based or something?

I synth'd the samples myself and ended up not using one.wav, but left it in the sample pack incase I plan on using it for something else :)  At the time I did cheekyms, mame didn't emulate the samples, so I did everything from scratch.  The current mame though, emulates the analog hardware section of cheekyms, but it is so resource-demanding that I can only get about 5fps with this new emulation...  Due to this resource-intensity - I feel that at this time emulating analog sections isn't really the way to go.

best regards & happy gaming,

Updated....
+ off-topic things moved to http://neo-source.com/index.php?topic=3253.0

GAME 1. Street Fighter II (+ many bootleg versions/variants).

All of them played briefly to find what the hack or glitchyness is. Nice surprises.

Note 1: I like best the "Championship Edition..." (also known as Black Belt Edition sometimes I think), why I like this series / bootlegs?.... they keep the original basic punch kick versions of SF series and have a few twists. My best so far is:

- SF YYC bootleg [sf2yyc.zip]
for the wide low dragon punches hitting as dragon punch comes down it seems sometimes

- SF Rainbow Edition [sf2rb.zip]
for slow fireballs, fast hurricane kicks, fireballs with every special move, chaos!

Note 2: SF Fun Screenshot - see attached screenshot for fun circumstance captured - I get player 2 with a fireball after I've died (it was done by sending fireballs from both directions - greatgreat fun (throw a fireball, zoom to other side of the screen using Hurricane kick and throw more fireballs from facing the other direction - I didn't plan to die but was fun for me seeing the other player get hit after I died in the same place I fell!)

Note 3: I had ROMS for FB v0.113 and earlier!!! Had to replace a few (were wrong or for early Final Burn emulator / updated etc). Mainstream versions of Street Fighter II are fun too but I'm more checking the old roms now...

GAME 2. Super Puzzle Fighters II Turbo [SPF2T.ZIP]

Simple game to play, maybe hard to master or there is more to it... I never was taught or bothered researching but maybe there's some hidden tips and tricks more than just chaining combos of colours all at once?

Note 1 In future I could read a tutorial (or take a suggestion from community member) to see if there are things the arcade doesn't mention / hint already (the only obvious thing is the player select shows the characters strength or preferred way of combo chains - vertical, horizontal combinations for each character)

Note 2: AMAZING --> No "Street Fighter" in the name ... crazy no? Super Puzzle Fighters II Turbo....
I thought I was going crazy using the search... as I knew I had it and 'wasn't coming up in the search' which I'm learning not to take at face value doing these things 0 eventually just typed puzzle to find it in the list! Any thoughts why not mention of SF exactly even if they bought rights or something (it's clearly SF is it not?)

Note 3: SPF2TA.ZIP (ASIA) allows 1 credit for two players together! What a novel idea :)
I couldn't think of a word better than novel... suggestions welcome :)

GAME 3. Pacman - [PACMANIA.zip / PACPLUS.ZIP [B&W VERSION] / PACMANBL.zip
MY BEST = PACPLUS.ZIP [B&W VERSION]
I had these and tested them - I must have kept them as I liked them and are pretty solid as a super-minimal simple game and even nerve racking at times... which I really like! Chomp Chomp.

Note 1: The PacMania seems 'unresponsive' or I mean I have to hold the direction on the keyboard to make sure Pacman goes there... more specifically I mean that playing the older PACPLUS.ZIP you press direction (like up) well before any turn and it seems to save the input and turn at the next available point. Pacman goes up long after you press the direction. PacMania more needs pressing exactly at the corner or holding NOT saving input before... It's a shame as I like the 3D / Mania version of Pacman but and may I'm simply used to planning well with keyboard input much before turns!... Yeah I tested it again and holding down a direction is recommended otherwise one can often and easily miss a turn (which is quite important for this game!)

Yours truly Ken,
I mean Ryu, or sometimes Guile...
even EX Plus Chun-Li
or standard Zangief on my best days

----------------------------------------
EXTRA STUFF MAYBE UNEEDED / THINKING ABOUT FOR NEXT EDIT OF POST (AND MY THOUGHTS)

Thanks (if only gaming paid eh? ...well that's the problem with money, it assumes people want to be paid or measured in such ways... as consumers... at least people could give us the credit and food for playing and making all these things  :) Keeping the vibe alive is worth our efforts!)

Ok off to training ...(again - the 2nd day I'm working out while editing all the ideas and taking a break by training!)

Personal Pictures: If there is a place on the forum for putting more personal photos (not too personal) let me know - not cosplay https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosplay (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosplay) tho!...?... but seeing some cosplay sites years before did swing me on how cool it is to be your character or player, but maybe I'm the real training type, in the training hall and working out - that might be my cosplay!)
Could put it as my avatar?... done

Probably because half of the characters do not come from Street Fighter. On a side note, it's made by Capcom, so they didn't have to buy any rights, the IPs were theirs to use.

The fact i managed to finish this game at the age of 10 somehow frightens me . At the time i had a new game maybe twice a year, so finishing it was mandatory, now i wouldn't have the patience :p.

Supposedly the PC port needed a wall-hack cheat code to be finished because of a bug in the 3rd level : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_(NES_video_game). I know there was several variants of this game, funny thing : screenshots at the back of the NES version i own are from a different version (the screen displayed is slightly different in the game)

I never heard about the PC version. But according to wikipedia: "The game was ported to various home computer platforms in 1990, including the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Atari ST and Amiga." (...) "It was also released in 2007 on the Wii's Virtual Console." The NES version is hard as hell! I finished with saved game or I'd go mad. I also had this game when I was a kid, as I said before, but I never beated. Here the cartridge, with the amazing art:

Hmm, no. I definitely had the DOS version, and never needed a cheat code to finish the game. If that info is true, that means there's more than one DOS version.

Edit: it seems it was a bug in the US release that was fixed in the European one (https://youtu.be/cZLed1krEEQ?t=75). I'm from France, so that'd explain why I didn't encounter this bug.

I made 2 software-buying mistakes in my lifetime...
1: buying TMNT for PC after watching friends play the NES version
2: buying Ducktales for C64 after watching friends play the NES version.  <-possibly the worst mistake ever, thinking it would be anything like the NES game.

oh well :)

My 3 bros and I pooled our money to buy TMNT for PC... but in the end, we didn't regret it. We had fun with it. Back then, you couldn't be too picky; when you were stuck with one or more bad games, you played them to death anyway. I've played much worse games than TMNT for PC. It's a masterpiece compared to Fatman for the Mega Drive, for example.

I had a Super Nintendo, but I never played Metal Warriors. It's a classic, 4 sure. I will play some day. I'm too busy now, so I'm playing games that do not require me a lot of time. Lately I've played FATAL FURY SPECIAL. Great classic! One of my favorite fighting games of all time. I enjoy playing with Geese Howard!

Hey! What games have you been playing lately in FBNeo (OR FBAlpha, if you choose not to upgrade)?

One of my favorite new games, it's Nebs 'n Debs on NES.  It's kinda like Super Mario Bros. (the first one), but with a dash-mechanic

Website: https://www.nebsndebs.com/
See a video of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKlZASjmfnk
This video will also teach you how to use the dash to get to hard-to-reach places (around 6:20 timeindex)

Sometimes I actually have time to play a game, so...
Tonight it's Rockin' Kats on NES (in FBN!)
It's a nice platformer game where you have a silly punch-gun as a weapon.
This weapon can also be used sorta like the arm in Bionic Commando, but also as a super-high jump-tool if you jump and activate it while pointing at the ground.

have fun,

This one is a very fun game, Dink. Well, there is a game wich I'm playing too, but unfortunately it's not in Final Burn Neo, but still a fun game. It's the Alien 3 from Super Nintendo. I played and drinked some beer on weekend and I had a lot of fun doing that. Very challinging game, with missions to do it. I also like the environment of this game, it's very claustrophobic and its not a linear game!. The graphics are nice too. So, I recommend this game. Have fun if you'll try.

Master of Darkness on SMS
~~
If you take Ghost 'n Goblins, NES Castlevania and Rolling Thunder, merge the three and change the ghosts/people into Zombies, this is what you have.  Oh yea, those bats can be a real pain in the ass, too.
You get a primary & secondary weapon, the Axe primary weapon is a good one to keep most of the time.
The bosses and mid-boss (zombie super-spawn rooms) are a nice touch - most of the time platformers on SMS are lacking (missing depth, I guess), but this one has it all.

Caveman Ninja
Why is this game special?
x It's like Contra + Wonderboy mixed together
x Epic boss fights
x Awesome shoot-em-up style "ride the dinosaur" stage
x Some levels fork, allowing you to chose the next stage :)
x There's 4 ending-scenes to chose from!!
x It helped me realize I could do much greater fixes for this project.  Condensed story: Fell in love with this game right away, when I ended up getting far into the game I found that it had some major graphic bugs in the volcano levels.  I remember being bummed out on this one, thinking "how can such a great game be messed up?", and then looking at the graphics code and thinking "that must be magic.  I'd never be able to fix it."  Then a week later, fixed it.

I remember playing this in the arcades back in the early 90's - data east had a fairly decent run in those days and this particular title was one of there best efforts along with robocop, bad dudes vs dragon ninja, joe and mac and one of my favourite platformers called diet go go. Tempest Tips

If you don't have a spinner, try setting up like this:

Map P1 Spinner to the mouse wheel (click grab mouse, move mouse wheel and wait), then set Analog Sensitivity to 400%
X for button 1, Z for button 2.

Ever notice how after a few levels the game seems impossible - especially on the figure-8 level. this will help:
learn how to time your shot to kill enemies on your level by fireing one shot quickly right before they hit you from the side. - try not to let too many shots come out so you can kill many without having to wait for your shots to leave the screen before you can shoot again.
practice the above method, and try to stay as still as possible - once that is mastered, one can really start to kick ass.  For example, practice by playing the easy levels and let the enemies come to you on your level.

have fun :)

Agreed, I remember when Commando hit the arcades.  The sound and graphics were amazing at the time.

Burger Time is still one of my favorites...  although I was never quite able to get all of the eggs & hotdogs to group and the default high score is very high.

Never even heard of Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory...  had to google it...  looks like it wasn't a US game.  The youtube video seems like I'd be fun but hard as hell...  maybe even Ghosts-n-Goblins hard!

Anyone remember "Timber"?  I used to love that game!  Seems like Midway ripped off the Konami Track & Field sprites and dressed them up like Canadian lumberjacks!  They actually had a whole run of games with those same sprites!  But then again, Midway ripped off a bunch of stuff back in the day.  Namco nipped a lot of the Pacman stuff Midway did (ie. Ms. Pacman, Super Pacman).

I'm just glad that I am old enough to remember the glory days of the arcades back in the early 1980s....  where games actually cost 0.25!  Took the kids on vacation over the summer and everything was timed and cost $1.00.  I guess they got wise to us old guys who learned patterns, etc and were able to play for several hours on 0.25! lol

In parting, there was one arcade place we used to go to that used tokens instead of quarters and the floor was planks with 1/2" gaps between the boards....  so that when you accidentally dropped a token, guess where it went?  You'd get that split second of going...  Oh shit!  and then you'd watch it roll and go down between the boards!!

Those were the days, buddy!

The "Amusement centers" kids have today are nothing compared to how it was back in the day.  A few years back whilst taking a break from bowling, me and my buddys nephew's checked out the little arcade area, it was all crap.  a 20 second "game" costs $1, horrific..

Master of Darkness its a hidden gem, like Kenseiden, another gem from SMS. Great games and everybody should play! Yesterday I played Bart vs. the Space Mutants from NES. My sister ask me to play that game, because she want to see the ending. I had this game when I was a child. For me, it's one of the best Simpsons games ever made!

Bad Dude,
I rented that game many many many years ago, and unfortunately never figured out how to play it right.
Maybe I have to give it another try now, ~30 years later.  Do you have any tips? :)

Yeah. Its a very simple game. To be able to fight against the boss, you have an objective. For example, in the first stage, you have to paint with your spray a certain numbers of purple objects. In the second stage, you have to collect hats. In the third, you have to collect
balloons, and so on... To get help from your relatives against the boss, you have to kill a certain numbers of aliens. To find out if a person is an alien, you need to wear your dark glasses. That's the basics tips! ;-)

Pooper Scooper (spec_pooperscooper)
It's a fast-paced action-puzzler game.
got great music, sfx and silly graphics.
your characters are: the little guy, the wasp (Willy, who also stars in his own game), sh*t eating beetle and the worm.
your job is to remove the piles of sh*t from the screen using the sh*t-eating beetle character.

Here's a decent YT video of the game in motion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_Gb_dbDc70

Download the rom here (it's free/homebrew/click the little orange cassette tape): https://spectrumcomputing.co.uk/index.php?cat=96&id=34428
rename to pooperscooper.zip and throw in roms/spectrum

Nice. I really don't know much about the ZX Spectrum, as I've never played it back in the days. But the more I see games that run on it, the more I can guess its restrictions when it comes to colors. And here I can appreciate the very clever use of colors, with graphics that have just the right size to fill tiles and have colors that don't bleed to the nearest tiles, unlike most other ZX games. It comes at the price of tile by tile movements, though, but that's fine for this type of game.

Finally finished my game of Don Doko Don 2 (T-Eng version) on NES, which is a nice little platformer with excellent boss battles.

Defo a good game for fans of Chiki Chiki / Mega Twins-style platformers.  Basically your weapon is a huge hammer, and you squash baddies, then take their squashed body and throw it at other enemies / bosses

spec_oldtower - Old Tower on ZX Spectrum
This is a fun speed-puzzler, kinda like Pacman on speed.  The puzzle element doesn't begin until several levels in.  Even if you have a complete aversion to anything spectrum, check this one out.  It even has great music & graphics.

Or play the Mega Drive version: https://youtu.be/AtvTgv8ezhM
Which has the title written in plural form, for some reason (Old Towers).

The Megadrive is too powerfull for a small game like this, and somehow loses its charm - at least for me :P

not sure why you feel that way, this would have blown me away back in the day.

Wish we'd got Ikazuse! Koi no Doki Doki Penguin Land MD as part of a physical compilation cartridge back in the day, instead of it ending up on a Japanese MegaCD SegaNet collection.  Didn't even know about it until emulation.

Been digging through my collection of old ZX Speccy games looking for things to speedrun or just stuff that aged well.

Elven Warrior - looks like a cutesy platformer, but you being unable to jump sideways turns in into more of a puzzle where the main challenge is to find an optimal route through each 'dungeon', spending as little ammo and spells as possible.

La Espada Sagrada - don't speak a word of Spanish, but this one is impressive. You've got Dizzy-like inventory puzzles, fiendish platforming, and an entirely different game as the last level. With a bit of a stress on the 'fiendish' part.

Hydrofool - one of the better isometric collect-a-thons. The wonderful Rob Hubbard's tune is both somewhat out of place and weirdly appropriate.

Moontorc - also a platformer with limited resources. Also with focus on melee, shops, coloured keys, and weird jumping physics. Could be fun to speedrun.

Myth - a few neat tricks and skips in this one, speedrun-wise, but having to collect 10 skulls at the start, along with the random drops, kills the speedrunning potential. Pretty fun levels casually, though - plenty of gimmicks to figure out.

Pixy Microdot 2 - I just marvel at the mere fact how much character can be in a game where you're controlling just one pixel. Some tight corners in this one, with magnets and inertia to fight.

Rex - sat down to play this one properly at last, and boy have I never expected it to be this hard. (But damn it looks gorgeous even now.) You're trying to preserve what little shields you've got left, whilst making tight jumps and trying to avoid crossing too many lines of sight. And then you realise there's side B.

Rockman - part Lode Runner, part... Boulder Dash? Sokoban? Quite addictive, despite being a rather early title.

Wacky Races - the racing segments are a pleasure to route and execute, if a bit heavy on memorisation. Some of the nicest platforming on the Speccy. The game as a whole is a blast casually, might also make for a good speedrun (although I fear that with proper execution it could be a bit auto-scrolley).

Love or hate! I played at the time and I love it. Today I play quick matches, without any pretensions. I'm glad to be able to play it on my favorite emulator, which is FBN. So, let?s kick some ass in an underground match, making money and success! There's also the Mega Drive version. An excelent port.

On an early 80's kick lately

1)Sinistar:I can't believe how I missed this game until now ! Frantic and hard hard as hell , all the digitized sound effects and stuff
Beware I live !!! Good stuff

2)Zektor:An early Asteroids type game from Sega with some original ideas and progression ! I love vector games !

3)Funky Fish: Highly psychodelic Defender clone where you play as a robot? fish and fight against giant eyeballs and get cherries as bonus points , which rot and turn into flies! when you fail to obtain them

4)Mars:A Scramble type game which is also kind of proto twin stick shooter , way ahead of its time imo

5)Juno First:Underrated gem and one of my all time favourite shmups , I can play this game for hours !

Juno First and Sinistar, some seriously awesome games there.  Like you, I missed them in the 80's, but glad to have found them :)
I will give Mars and Funky Fish a try soon:)

I've been playing Anteater a bit. It is addictive, but I think its main weakness is that the random stage layout aspect of the game makes it unfair. When there are paths in the middle, it's much safer than we you have to take a path on the side, close to the edge of the screen.

Fun game bug I've had once but can't reproduce: I could take out my tongue from the ground and move it above the ground.

Nice. I didn't know this game. I am going to try. I'm having a beer today, America Ipa. Today is a cold day here and I'm listening some music (Jozez Van Wissem), having a nice day, you know... There is one game that i'm trying to beat. I played on the Mega Drive in the 90's. I really like this game. This game looks cute, but in my opinion is dark and macabre. I'm talking about of Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse. It's a must play, in my opinion.

Stifu, that's a funny bug, it has happened to me before as well :)  There's a great Anteater-style game called "Go Go Mile Smile", rom-name "gogomile" that is definitely worth checking out.

bye for now,

Funnily, I've owned this game for 20 years or something, but never played it (the cart did not work, it was second hand that I got for free, I think). I've just finished it with my daughter watching, using save states. It is a nice early Mega Drive game. Looks good, sounds good, plays well. I see World of Illusion is very much inspired from it.

My only complaint is that you're supposed to get 7 gems, but there are only 5 worlds. To me, it sounds like they went out of time or budget and decided to cram 2 gems in each of the last 2 worlds.

Wow, it's been a while!
I don't usually have time for games any more, but, the other day I was going through a few homebrew's on NES and I found...

Bobby Six Seven - The Time Traveling Detective

The gameplay is really simple - just run and shoot, then there's a boss fight at the end of level.
The reason I played to the end is the funny story that the police sheriff-guy tells at the end each level.

Be sure to catch that silly intro, where the fish guy is running in traffic, it's part of the story :)

Heavy Barrel,
This game is super-bad-ass.  an all-time favorite for me.  Got to the end-boss without dieing, and then lost 2 lives because I forgot how to defeat him.  In the end I made it to the end.  Good time!

Black Widow,
Made it to level 50.  I like how the game introduces new enemies further into the game - like the "Grenade bugs" and the bugs that split into 3 little dive-bomber bugs.  After level 40, the game ramps up difficulty level to "insane".
