Best way to play racing games in FBA?
« on: April 27, 2014, 05:54:35 PM »
Hi,
It seems like classic racing games, such as Outrun, Power Drift, Dual Axle and such need an analogue input to control the steering.  When I map the steering to the thumbstick on my gamepad (Dualshock3 w/the Scarlet.Crush driver), the car always goes back to the center of the road when you let off the stick.  It just doesn't seem like a nice way to enjoy these old classics..

How do you guys have the inputs mapped?  Please post any tips for better enjoyment of the games.

best regards,
- dink

If you remember the home computer versions of Outrun on the C64 or Sega Mastersystem, or Mario Kart on SNES, they played just fine with digital inputs aka 1 button to go left, one button to go right.  Do you think that an option added to FB Alpha to emulate the steering digitally, like the home versions, would be nice?

They work well digitally.

Analogue - I'm not 100% sure about - but FBA does support setting center/auto-center etc.

It is something you may need to set in the game's ini though - I can't remember. The input dialog code in burner would probably give more info.

Treble Winner, I can't quite figure it out, for example - in the game Double Axle there is an input called Steering, but you need 1 button for L and one for R.

The driving games in FBA handle fine with an X360 pad IMO.

After Burner is very, very broken and unresponsive with a 360 pad though. Seriously, the turning is sluggish and the throttle control does not work so it is impossible to barrel-roll, brake or even switch the afterburners on!

I had to re-install MAME just to play it properly in the end.

Hmm, I'll see if theres a way to possibly enhance the controlls for Afterburner in FBA.
EDIT: I got barrel rolling to work, just have to work out the other issues..
EDIT#2: Afterburner should be perfect with the next release of FBA [whenever that might be] :)

I hate asking cos i use an xbox port of FBA and i never can tell if some issues are xbox related rather than FBA related
But... Have you tried Super Monaco GP and if so can you choose a manual gear shift play option and actually
shift the gears up and down?? the xbox version of FBA aka FBL has missing keymaps for this game so gear shift is unmapped
just wondered if the PC version is the same or not??

gamez fan,
The good news, gear shifting works, the bad news: there is no track to drive on.  What a weird bug :)

dink,

The track in smgp does work - but the game uses a FD1094 version of the 68000 so will be using the c core (the asm core doesn't have the necessary callbacks). This will be a bug in your miscompiled C core.

Treble Winner, ahh, I knew the ole cpu/compiler bug would get me again when I was least expecting it.  Hopefully I can get it fixed by tweaking the compiler commandline or optimization.

gamez fan, I didn't do any changes to Super Monaco, so it works by default :)

Thanks for replaying if the gears work fine in super monaco GP with the PC Build of FBA then it must be an issue confined to the
xbox and FBL missing keymap settings will more than likely be the cause
