This is just curiosity rather than a bug request or anything, but I've been playing through Taito's series of "Football Champ" games recently and noticed something odd and wondered what the explanation of it was.

The aforementioned games are regional releases of Hat Trick Hero '94 and Hat Trick Hero '95 respectively. In their HTH incarnations they both have crowd noise throughout the game, but IC94 and TPG play in silence, like they're COVID tournaments in empty stadia.

It's not just FBNeo - they're the same in every version of MAME I've tried, up to 0.277. But it wasn't the case in arcades, because there are YouTube videos of both and the crowd noise is there.

(I've no idea what they used to make those videos.)

So what's going on?

Hi,
This one is actually a setting in nvram, press F2 after the game boots and go to Configuration and find "Cheers", set it to "with"

best regards,
- dink

Incidentally, does anyone have any idea what the "Buy In" switch in the config menu for the games in this series is for? It makes no apparent difference to anything.

- it doesn't affect whether a second player can buy in and join your game while you're playing

- it doesn't affect whether you can continue after losing a game

- it doesn't affect whether you can add powerup points during play by pressing the Start button to convert credits into points

The operators manuals are no help and I'm all out of ideas.

Did you test all games in the series ? It's not unusual for a given dipswitch to only work for a given version.

Yes, I tested them all, and they all did nothing in different ways. For example:

- in Taito Cup Finals, pressing Start on the Special Menu turns credits into powerup points whether Buy In is set to On or Off (and your points are labelled Buy-In onscreen, which suggests it's supposed to be related to that).

- in Hat Trick Hero '93, however (which is a variant of the same game), pressing Start DOESN'T turn credits into points, whether Buy In is on or off.
